Too Many Products
I once heard a comedian talk about how Americans might have a bit too much freedom. She joked that when Americans go to restaurants, they can ask for the most ridiculous things and the restaurant will try to accommodate. I've lived in other countries, and even in Canada, which isn't that different from the US (sorry Canadians, but it's true) has limits to what you can ask for.
The principle definitely applies to tech. How many different Motherboard options do we need? Or Graphics cards? How many different laptop models do each manufacture need to make? I don't expect everybody to just make one, but come on, do we really need 30 versions of the nVidia RTX 5090? Or 40 motherboards compatible with each processor socket?
It's not like I'm complaining about features, having more or less features, for comparable prices isn't the problem, but of those 30 5090 versions, there really aren't that many differences between each. You've got default clocking changes (which can be changed by users anyway), different fan configs, that maybe change temps by 1 or 2 degrees, water coolers, added screens with more info, all sorts of stuff. Even simple stuff like mobile batteries for charging your devices. If you do a web search right now, how many millions of batteries exist to recharge your phone on the go. When you really look at it, there are really only about 5 different options, and a million iterations of each.
Looking at it, it's causing a lack of trust in the industry as a whole, but creating a new business opportunity with resellers. If I created a new type of mobile battery, I could sell it on Amazon, but if I paid Amazon a bunch of money, they would put my battery on their list of "Sponsored Products" and put me at the top of the list. It doesn't matter how bad my battery is, tons of people are going to buy it, and not know any better. Even Google has started doing it with searches. Search Engine Optimization (or SEO) doesn't matter as much when I can pay Google a bunch of money to make me the first thing that shows up.
I guess what I'm really trying to say is we all need to be careful buying stuff, and really do the research to make sure what we're getting is what we want. It's inconvenient to the point that it's removing the convenience on online shopping, but I guess that's just the world we live in now.
